Dong Fang Zhu Li Ye - Tokyo Juliet
Dong Fang Zhu Li Ye is a 2006 Taiwanese drama, airing from June to September, and is a live-action adaption of the Japanese manga, Tokyo Juliet. When she was a child, Lin Lai Sui (Ariel Lin), she was alone and scared at a party, and a young boy comforted her until her mother found her again. He said her hair was so beautiful and long. Since then, she has kept her hair long just for this boy, her first love. However, now, she has promised herself not to fall in love until she surpasses her nemesis, Chu Xing (Simon Yam), who is at the top of the fashion design world, and stole her Little Daisy design when she was five. However, when she meets Ji Feng Liang (Wu Chun), she realizes that she is doing just that. Sui soon discovers that Liang not only is the boy from the party, but that he is Chu Xing’s only son. Despite everything, the two fall in love, and then begin the arduous task of defeating Chu Xing. They are faced with hardships and many obstacles, but they are there for each other. In the end of the drama, the chance for Sui to fairly defeat Chu Xing comes, and finally, Liang and Sui are able to be happy together. I feel that Ariel Lin and Wu Chun had very good chemistry throughout the drama. At first, it seemed a little awkward, but after the first few episodes, I soon fell in love with the couple. Even though I had to read subtitles the entire time, since I don’t speak a word of Mandarin, I was still able to pick up the feelings of the two for the entire show. The drama is what it is, full of dramatic moments. However, with the comedic relief of Pei Mei Zi (Cai Yi Zhen), Ai Li Ou (Tang Zhi Ping), and Lu Mi Yi (Huang Hong Sheng), as well as many other characters, it gives you enough laughs to keep you from being overwhelmed. It seems to me that all the characters were cast well, for they all seemed to serve their roles to the fullest. I have heard that some character’s accents were very noticeable, due to dialects, etc., but in my opinion, it probably would not bother me if I could distinguish them. One thing that really bugged me about Tokyo Juliet was the lack of going into Sui’s mother’s relationship. Around episode 6 or 7, it is made known that Sui’s mother is married to Chu Xing. However, there is no mention of her mother again until episode 16 or 17. This was one of the things that had really made Sui angry during the show, that Chu Xing had taken everything from her, but they don’t go into something of such great importance during the show. After all, Little Daisy was something Sui designed for her mother. Overall, Tokyo Juliet is a drama you can’t help but fall in love with. It seems a little lengthy, but even though every episode is over an hour, and there are seventeen, none of them lack in plot development. The characters are loveable, the filming is amazing, the fashion world is depicted quite accurately, and the story itself is wonderful. While some of it seems over the top at times, it isn’t unbelievable. Tokyo Juliet is drama you definitely should watch. <<---back |
