FRESHMAN YEAR
FRESHMAN INITIATIVE
Two courses are offered to freshman to help them adjust more quickly and successfully to the unique modular system of Incarnate Word High School. These courses are taught by junior students.
Fish Tips I (1st Semester): Freshman meet one day a week during the first nine weeks of the school year and covers the following topics:
- Getting to know one another
- The modular schedule
- The course syllabus and LAP (Learning Activity Packet)
- How to organize and keep a planner
- Tips on note taking and studying
- Time management
- How to become involved in extracurricular activities
- How to successfully and effectively communicate with Teachers
- The do's and don'ts of using the Testing Center
- The high school library
- How to deal with stress
- The Incarnate Word High School Mission
- IWHS "stories"
Fish Tips II (2nd Semester): This course is designed to help freshmen look at relationship issues. It is taught during the third nine weeks of the school year. Topics that may be covered include:
- Successful peer relationships
- Dating issues
- Goal-setting
- Mediation skills
- Eating disorders
- Drug and alcohol abuse
