General Overview of What You Need to Consider When Applying to College

How to Choose a College

  • There are so many different types of colleges, majors to study, and areas of the country and abroad that you can go to school. But how do you choose? What things should you consider? What is important? What do you value? How will you fit in? It is a lot to think about. Take time to reflect on what your goals are and what is of value for you to experience while at college.
  • Familiarize yourself with the college! Research their website, talk with the admissions and financial aid counselors, students, alumnae or anyone who is familiar with the campus.
  • Schedule to visit the college , if possible. You can also do a virtual tour at most colleges on their website.
  • Make your final selections for what colleges you will be applying to. It seems so easy to pick some colleges to apply to, but what are you actually choosing? How many should you apply to? Will you get accepted? Many things to ponder but there is light at the end of the tunnel. In this section there are some important tips in choosing where you should send in your application.

Review the College Application Process

  • It is important to understand the college application process. The Guidance Office can help you to understand and follow a timeline to ensure you are on task and apply on time. An important tip: Keep a copy of your application and confirmation number. Give a copy to your Guidance Counselor in case you must reproduce and send if your original application is lost.
  • Develop your personal profile, otherwise known as your resume. This includes a listing of your courses, leadership, activities, community service, and interests.
  • Take a college entrance exam, otherwise known as an SAT and/or ACT. Some colleges require SAT Subject Test(s). Please check with the admissions office or website for more information. It is recommended that a student take their first SAT/ACT no later than the spring semester of their junior year.
  • Request or download a current college application. Some applications will be available in the Guidance Office.
  • Prepare your essay , if required by college.
  • Request your high school transcript from the Registrar’s Office. Do this at lease three weeks in advance.
  • Request letter(s) of recommendation from your teachers. You must use a Request for Teacher Recommendation form.
  • Provide your Guidance Counselor with a Secondary Report/Counselor’s Evaluation as soon as possible, if applicable.
  • If required or optional, schedule an interview.
  • Ask Questions!!!!
