EVENT INFORMATION
The tournament is comprised of six different events: Duet Acting, Impromptu, Monologue, Poetry, Prose, and Public Speaking. Students may compete in more than one event. We hope that the following description of each event will assist you in deciding which even to participate in. Please note that the judges will be looking for the best and brightest in each area and will be enforcing the following criteria at the tournament.
- Duet Acting — Students work as partners to perform a work taken from a published play, short story, or novel. The piece must be memorized and performed in no more than seven (7) minutes. No props or costumes of any kind are allowed, except for two chairs (provided by IWHS).
- Impromptu — Students draw a topic and have one minute to compose a creative speech of one (1) to five (5) minutes pertaining to the topic.
- Monologue — Students perform a work taken from a novel, play, or short story that is dramatic and/or humorous. The student will present the selection from memory in no more than seven (7) minutes. No props or costumes of any kind are allowed.
- Poetry — Students present a poem or a selection of poems that total no more than five (5) minutes. Poems must be by published authors (poems published only on the Internet or by other students are not acceptable). The student should select material that reflect his or her own interests, aspirations, etc. The selection(s) should be in a folder (good condition), and performed in an expressive manner. Students should be familiar with their poetry selections, but do not need to memorize them as they will have the folder open in front of them during the performance. The open folder is not optional and must be used to present the poems.
- Prose — Students present a prose work from a novel or short story that totals no more than five (5) minutes. As with poetry, prose pieces must be published. Prose pieces should also be placed in a folder (good condition) and then presented in an expressive fashion. As with poetry, students should be familiar with their selections, but must present them from the open folder.
- Public Speaking — Students perform a famous speech from history or current politics in no more than five (5) minutes. The speech may be memorized or performed from a folder (good condition).
