Mary Ann de la Garza is a 1969 graduate of Incarnate Word High School. In 1975, she received two Bachelor of Music degrees from the University of the Incarnate Word (then Incarnate Word College). At UIW, she studied organ with Sr. Maria Goretti Zehr and Judith Gibson. In 1973, Mary Ann was one of six organ students in the state of Texas chosen to perform in a Master Class with the renowned British organist E. Power Biggs. In 1974, she was selected to give an organ recital at Colorado State University for her honors music fraternity Delta Omicron. In 1979 Mary Ann received her Master of Music from the University of Notre Dame where she studied organ under Sue Seid-Martin. While attending Notre Dame, she was one of the organists for the Basilica of the Sacred Heart and served as accompanist for the University Chorus. She also served as vice-president and accompanist for the Notre Dame Chorale.

From 1979-1982, Mary Ann was an Artist-in-Residence for the National Endowment for the Arts and the Texas Commission for the Arts. Mary Ann has been the Music Director and organist for Blessed Sacrament Parish in San Antonio, Texas since 1980 and since 1996 she has been one of the authorized organists for the Chapel of the Incarnate Word. She has been on the faculty at Incarnate Word High School since 1979. During this time, she has worn many hats including that of administrator, Fine Arts Department Chair and served on many IWHS and UIW Committees.

Since 1979, the Choral and Madrigal program has grown tremendously under her direction. The Glee Club has been recognized as a TAPPS (Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools) award winning choir. They received 4th place at State in 2009 and 2015 and 3rd place in 2010, 2013 and 2014. They were State Runner-Up in 2006, 2008 and 2012 and State Champions in 1997-2005, 2007, and 2011.

The Madrigals were invited to sing at the White House and the Department of State in 2002. In 2003, they were asked to sing for President George W. Bush’s Presidential Christmas Receptions for the Foreign Ambassadors and Dignitaries at Blair House. In 2008, the Madrigals were once again invited to carol at the White House for the President’s invited guests.

Mary Ann was recognized by the Alumni Association of the University of Notre Dame for her singular contribution to the Education of Youth in 1996 and in 2005. In 1996, she was named Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year. She was selected as the TAPPS Fine Arts Teacher of the Year in 1998 and 2000 and in 2001 she was recognized for her service and leadership by the Archdiocesan Federation of Catholic Parent Teachers Clubs.

In 2006, Mary Ann was the faculty recipient of the CCVI Spirit Award and named a Shamrock Legend at the 125th Gala of Incarnate Word High School. In 2007, she received the Mother Columkille Colbert award for her commitment to the community and for carrying forward the mission of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. And in 2009, Mary Ann de la Garza was named an Outstanding Leader in Catholic Education by the Archdiocese of San Antonio.
