Women of the Word Series

Lupita A. Castrejón Tijerina – IWHS 1989
This new speaker series provides a platform for accomplished women to speak to Shamrocks about what it means to be a Woman of The Word
For the kickoff meeting on September 2nd via ZOOM, Dr. Downey and Rosie Cortez, Director of Campus Ministry, asked me to give my impression of what it means to be a Woman of the Word. I was deeply honored and shared two biblical quotes: One, from Micah 6:8 where we learn that "God requires us to do justice, to love with kindness, and walk humbly with Him"; and the second in Matthew 7:12 where Jesus gives the Golden Rule and entreats us to be gentle with one another – treating others as we would want to be treated. The following week, our inaugural speaker, Sr. Tere Maya, urged the Seniors to remember that inequalities that abound for women are real, and that as young women who move in and about in the world once they graduate from IWHS to always remember that superheroes are also women. Gini Garcia, Class of 1982 and owner of Garcia Art Glass, created a hand-blown glass Madonna award that was presented to Sr. Tere.

Our next Woman of the Word speaker event will take place on Nov. 11th and will feature Diana Barrios Treviño 1981.
