Solar Sisters Journal Entry April 4, 2024

There is no ‘I’ in TEAM, but there is a ‘T,’ ‘T’ for telescope!

The IWHS Dynamic Eclipse Broadcasting (DEBs) Team, or Solar Sisters as we like to call ourselves, has been on the move recently! As we inch closer to the total solar eclipse day, we are preparing to upload solar images for NASA’s database. The “Solar Sisters” is made up of six girls, four freshmen, one sophomore, and one junior. The team Solar Sisters are Helen Guajardo, Rory Sorola, Catalina “Cat” Pineda, Mackenzie “Mack” Carswell, Lauren Letz, and Madeline “Maddie” Cernoch. Each of us brings our own strengths to this project. Together as a team, we run smoothly and efficiently! Our big day is approaching quickly, and we are both ready and nervous. On Wednesday, April 3, we ran our last test run taking images of the sun looking for the sun’s spots and uploading the pictures to the DEB site. It was exciting to also have a SA Reporter online reporter and photographer on site to witness our practice run on campus! They interviewed team members and Mrs. Medrano and Ms. Luna wondering how we were selected for this unique all-girl team!

Each one of us is touched to be researching a once in lifetime experience at a youthful age. I do not think any of us saw this in our paths, but here we are today. Our countdown is on April 8th, and we could not be more enthusiastic for a project.

As young women interested in pursuing STEM careers, we do this knowing in our hearts that this monumental event for us is just a rung of the ladder we climb as aspiring young ladies looking to make a change in the STEM career fields. Our intent is to not only do this research but serve as examples for other young women with the same interests and dreams. The future of science is women!
